WILMINGTON—Today, Delaware Governor Matt Meyer and Secretary of Education Cindy Marten issued the following statements regarding Delaware’s scores on the 2024 National Association of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the Nation’s Report Card:

“Today marks a turning point for Delaware. We have a literacy emergency, and it is time for shared accountability and unwavering support for every child,” said Governor Meyer. “As a former math teacher, I understand firsthand that literacy and mathematics aptitude must go hand in hand if we want our kids, and our state, to prosper. That’s why I am excited that Secretary Marten, who was confirmed today and is a national literacy expert, will work alongside me and our dedicated educators and district leaders to devise an action plan for Delaware, ensuring every child has the unique resources they need to succeed while also providing critical support to our school staff, paraprofessionals, teachers, and administrators.”

Delaware’s Literacy Focus
In meetings with state leaders during her confirmation process, Secretary Marten said she was struck by the amount of agreement that exists on the need for urgent, transformational change within the state educational system. Governor Meyer is thankful to the Senate for confirming Marten, who is already getting to work for Delaware’s kids.

“These results are a warning light on the dashboard of our education system—a warning we cannot afford to ignore,” said Secretary Marten, referring to the latest NAEP results for the state. “Now is the time for focused action, support for our educators, and a commitment to the strategies that will drive real progress for our students. I look forward to collaborating with education experts across Delaware to set our students up for success and ensure we start achieving the bold reform agenda outlined by Governor Meyer.”
