Office of Animal Welfare Hosts Training on Emergency Sheltering for Companion Animals

When severe weather forces people to leave their homes, no one wants to leave their pets behind. To ensure there is a place in Delaware shelters for pets, the Office of Animal Welfare’s Delaware Animal Response (DAR) program hosted an interactive, two-day training on how to set up emergency shelters for companion animals. The approximately 30 attendees are volunteers for the State Animal Response Team (SART), including animal rescuers, veterinarians or veterinary technicians, animal control officers, and members of the public who have an interest in disaster preparedness and response.




Winter storm precautions urged for livestock, poultry owners

The Delaware Department of Agriculture reminds poultry and livestock growers to take proper precautions to shelter and protect their animals as winter storm season is upon us.




Governor Markell Signs Legislation to Strengthen Animal Welfare Laws

Animal welfare advocates, legislators and shelter animals flanked Governor Markell as he signed four animal protection bills at the Delaware Humane Association in Wilmington. The new laws establish oversight and training programs for animal shelters and animal control officers and prohibit shelters from using gas chambers. In addition, trained personnel must evaluate animals seized in criminal activity, cruelty, and animal fighting for adoptability, instead of automatic euthanasia.
