DNREC’s DuPont Nature Center announces family-friendly programs for July

SLAUGHTER BEACH – The DuPont Nature Center at Mispillion Harbor Reserve, a DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife facility located in the heart of Delaware’s Bayshore Region, will host a variety of family-friendly programs during the month of July.

  • Storybook Saturday, 11 a.m.-noon, July 8 – Stories about aquatic species and visitors to the Delaware Bay will be followed by activities geared to children ages 3 and older.
  • Family Fish-n-Fun Day, 1-3 p.m., Saturday, July 15 and 10 a.m.- noon, Sunday, July 23 – Through hands-on fishing activities geared to ages 6 and older, participants will learn about saltwater fishing, fish anatomy, knot tying and casting. Program meets at the Slaughter Beach Pavilion, located behind the fire hall at 359 Bay Avenue, Milford, DE 19963.
  • Fishy Fashions, 1-3 p.m., Saturday, July 22 – Ages 6 and older will learn the parts of a fish and design their own through a Gyotaku fish printing activity.
  • Ebb and Flow: What Brings the Tide In, 10-11 a.m., Saturday, July 29 – Have you ever wondered why the tide flows in and out? Learn about the tide, how it cycles, and why it’s important to the Delaware Bay in this presentation for adults.

Although walk-ins are welcome, participants are asked to pre-register to ensure enough materials for activities are prepared in advance. For more information, contact Lynne Pusey at lynne.pusey@delaware.gov or call 302-422-1329.

Fishing program participants age 16 and older must have a current Delaware fishing license and a Delaware Fisherman Information Network (FIN) number. The free number is included as part of a Delaware fishing license purchase. License-exempt anglers, including Delaware residents 65 and older, may visit www.delaware-fin.com or call 800-432-9228 toll-free to obtain their free FIN number.

Delaware fishing licenses are sold online, at the licensing desk in DNREC’s Richardson & Robbins Building, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, DE 19901, and by license agents statewide. To find a participating agent, or to purchase a license online, visit Delaware Licenses. For more information on Delaware fishing licenses, call 302-739-9918.

The DuPont Nature Center is located at 2992 Lighthouse Road, near Slaughter Beach, east of Milford. From May 1 through Aug. 30, spring and summer hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, closed Mondays. Admission is free and open to the public.
