Flag Status | Former Governor Jack Markell (2009-2017) | Office of Management and Budget | Office of the Governor | Date Posted: Friday, December 6, 2013

With the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela, President Obama has ordered American flags at all government buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff beginning immediately as a mark of respect for the memory of Nelson Mandela and to honor the legacy he leaves behind.

In concurrence with the President’s order and in remembrance of Nelson Mandela and his many contributions to South Africa and the world, Gov. Markell has ordered the American and Delaware flags at state buildings and facilities also be flown at half-staff beginning immediately until the close of business on Monday, December 9.

The lowering of flags throughout the day on Saturday, December 7, also honors National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, when we recognize the sacrifices made by members of our military and their families on December 7, 1941.
