Governor’s Weekly Message Transcript: Tapping Local Businesses to Promote Delaware Tourism

Hi, I’m Linda Parkowski, director of Delaware’s Tourism Office. Our goal is to convince travelers to visit the First State – to shop, eat and stay with us. It’s a task with a big impact – adding $2.2 billion a year to our state’s economy and employing 39,000 people.

Fourteen events at Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs museums in August 2013

Highlights to include programs on the Prohibition era, the Tory raid on John Dickinson’s home and the founding of the colony of New Sweden.

U.S. military members invited to free lecture/tours of the hull of the DeBraak, a shipwrecked 18th-century British warship

Lecture/tours of the hull of His Majesty’s Sloop DeBraak, an 18th century British warship that sank off the Delaware coast on May 25, 1798. For current and former members of the U.S. military only.

“Shall Faithfully Serve!” at Dover, Del.’s John Dickinson Plantation on June 15, 2013

Program exploring indentured servitude. Participants will symbolically sign an indenture form with a quill pen, after which they will be assigned 18th century chores such as preparing wool for spinning, weaving and carding; kindling gathering for the smokehouse and cleaning. During their free time, participants will have a chance to play Colonial games, enjoy a house tour or explore the grounds.

“The Trial of William Penn”: Historical play to be presented at Dover, Del.’s Old State House on June 1, 2013

Living-history theater presentation exploring the trial of William Penn and the jury that went to jail when they would not find him guilty as charged.
