SMYRNA, Del. — The Delaware Citizens Corps and the Delaware Emergency Management Agency will hold a “CERT Basic Training Class” on Friday and Saturday, August 26 and 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day at the Clayton Fire Company, 300 East Street, Clayton, DE 19938.

Training is free and no experience is needed. Students must register at the Delaware Learning Center website*: dema.delaware.gov/training/

* New users will need to create an account to sign up.

Citizen Corps offers disaster preparedness training for the family and community through the “Community Emergency Response Team” (CERT) program. To date, about 4,500 Delaware citizens have taken the class, which provides citizens with the information necessary to prepare them to be self-sustaining during an emergency. The course will educate volunteers about disaster preparedness and train them in basic disaster response skills. Attendees will build and strengthen their capabilities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters to better assist their community and professional responders during an emergency event.

Citizen Corps is a Department of Homeland Security program that asks all citizens to be involved in the safety of their own communities. This is accomplished through training, education, and volunteer programs. Outreach programs have been established at the local level by counties, cities, and towns to support homeland security, family safety and community preparedness. In Delaware, the Citizen Corps Program is incorporated into the planning components of the Delaware Emergency Management Agency.
