DOVER – Governor Matt Meyer announced today that he will represent Delaware as a continuing member of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance (RFA), a nonpartisan coalition of governors committed to protecting and expanding reproductive health care in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Under Governor Meyer’s leadership, Delaware will play an active role in the Alliance’s work to safeguard and strengthen reproductive rights at the state level, especially amid growing federal threats to access. Specifically, the recent rescission of federal guidance on the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA)—which requires hospitals to provide emergency abortions when a patient’s life or health is at risk—has heightened concerns across the country of sowing confusion that could result in people being denied care. Governor Meyer said this development reinforced the urgency for Delaware to play an active role in a national, state-led effort to defend reproductive freedom.
“Delaware will always stand on the side of reproductive freedom. That means standing up for the right to make personal medical decisions without interference and ensuring access to lifesaving, emergency abortion care when patients’ lives and health are at risk,” said Governor Meyer. “Joining the Reproductive Freedom Alliance will strengthen Delaware’s ability to uphold these rights and values. At a time when critical federal protections are being weakened, it’s more important than ever that we are prepared—with the policy tools, legal strategies, and partnerships needed to meet the moment and protect the people of this state.”
Through the Alliance, Governor Meyer will work collaboratively alongside governors representing more than 180 million Americans to coordinate state-level responses to federal threats and share legal and policy strategies to expand access to the full spectrum of reproductive health services in Delaware and beyond.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Governor Meyer to the Reproductive Freedom Alliance,” said Christina Chang, Executive Director of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance. “His commitment to protecting reproductive freedom is a powerful example of how governors can step up and push back against a growing wave of federal attacks on reproductive healthcare. Delaware has long stood for access, equity, and dignity in reproductive healthcare, and with Governor Meyer at the table, we are stronger, more united, and better prepared to meet the challenges ahead.”
