Department of Agriculture protects animal health at Delaware State Fair

As more than 3,000 animals are carried, carted, hauled, led and ridden into the Delaware State Fair fairgrounds next week, each will get a personal welcome from a Delaware Department of Agriculture animal health inspector. It’s part of the behind-the-scenes work of the Poultry and Animal Health Section to protect the health of every chicken, horse, pony, rabbit, goat, sheep, duck, cow, pig and goat arriving at the fair.

Second annual home-brew beer competition set for Delaware State Fair

More than 300 bottles of home-brewed beer will compete for top honors next week as part of the Second Annual Battle of the Brews at the Delaware State Fair, sponsored by the Delaware Department of Agriculture. The July 21 event is Delaware’s only Beer Judge Certification Program-sanctioned event, where professional judges rate the work of home brewing enthusiasts in the First State.
Delaware Forest Service’s 2012 Urban Forestry Grant Program is now accepting applications.

The Delaware Forest Service is now accepting applications for its annual Urban & Community Forestry Grant Program, which has awarded over $1 million to more than 200 Delaware communities and organizations since the program’s inception in 1991. Municipalities and homeowner groups can apply for up to $5000 in matched funding for projects that increase tree canopy, develop and implement tree management plans, remove hazardous trees or use trees to mitigate storm water runoff. Each applicant must match its grant on a 50-50 cost-share basis with either nonfederal funds or in-kind services (volunteer time, staff time, etc.).

Governor Markell talks about the upcoming summer National Governors Association meeting,
which begins Friday, July 13. The NGA meets twice a year, bringing Governor together to see what’s working and to find new ways to work together in areas like jobs, schools, public safety and cost-cutting. Governor Markell, who is currently vice-chair, will become NGA Chair for the next year at the conclusion of the meeting.
