Delaware Ranks Second in CDC’s Breastfeeding Survey of Maternity Hospitals

Delaware maternity hospitals have much to be proud of including a new ranking for their support of breastfeeding mothers. Delaware ranks second the country in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) 2015 national survey of Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC). Delaware received its highest score in the history of the mPINC survey, a 90, tying with New Hampshire. Rhode Island received the nation’s high score of 96. Delaware’s score is up from 86 in 2013 and 63 in 2007. All eligible Delaware hospitals participated in the survey, which measures infant feeding care practices, policies, and staffing expectations in place at hospitals that provide maternity services.



Division of Public Health Announces New Zika Transmission Guidelines and Delaware Cases

Today, the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) updated its guidelines for sexual transmission of the Zika virus following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announcement of the first reported case of female to male sexual transmission in New York. DPH is also announcing two new travel-related cases in Delaware. A Sussex County woman, and a New Castle County man tested positive for the Zika virus, bringing the total number of cases in Delaware to 10. All of the Zika positive test results are due to a mosquito bite while traveling abroad and none involve a pregnancy. Both individuals were tested within the last few weeks.



Division of Public Health Again Reminds Patients of Concord Medical to Get Tested

The Division of Public Health (DPH) recommended again today that patients of Concord Medical Spine and Pain Center who had invasive procedures performed at the facility contact their health care provider to be evaluated for bloodborne diseases such as hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Letters were sent to any patient seen by Concord in the last four years; approximately 2,600 people. DPH recently issued a second letter reminding patients to speak with their medical providers; however, over 300 letters have been returned as undeliverable, likely due to former patients moving from the address on file.



Division of Public Health Announces Eighth Zika Case from Travel Abroad

Today, the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) announced a New Castle County man has tested positive for the Zika virus bringing the total number of cases in Delaware to eight. All of the Zika positive test results are due to a mosquito bite while traveling abroad and none involve a pregnancy. The man was tested within the last two weeks following recent travel.



DPH Encourages Everyone to Know Your HIV Status – “It’s Empowering”

The Division of Public Health (DPH) is encouraging Delawareans aged 13 to 64 that have not already done so to get a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) test. Although more than 3,500 people are known to be living with HIV in Delaware, one in ten of those infected don’t know they have the disease. That means that 400 people in Delaware may be infected but are unaware, posing a risk not only to their own health, but also to the health of others as well.
