DEMA, Office of Highway Safety, DelDOT, & i.g. Burton Auto Group Present Winter Weather Safety Campaign

The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), the Office of Highway Safety (OHS), State of Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) and i.g. Burton Auto Group are teaming up to observe Winter Weather Awareness Week from December 1 to 5, with a special focus on car safety. i.g. Burton dealerships across Kent, New Castle and Sussex Counties will each be giving away 100 free Car Safety Packs during their winter auto sales events. Each dealership will feature displays with information to help drive home the key messages of winter road safety.




State Agencies Preparing for Major Winter Storm

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), and other agencies are preparing for a major winter storm that is expected to impact the state starting Sunday night. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch with 5 to 10 inches or more of snow expected by Tuesday morning. Heavier snow could begin Monday around 6 a.m., with snowfall rates of one inch an hour possible. Cold temperatures and gusty winds will make travel difficult, especially during the morning and evening commutes.

Governor John Carney has activated the Delaware National Guard to support storm response operations. DEMA is also activating its Emergency Operations Center in Smyrna and coordinating with state, county, and local partners to meet ongoing needs for the duration of the event. State officials could also issue driving restrictions such as a Level 1 Driving Warning, which cautions motorists of adverse weather conditions and urges them to stay off the road if possible. Motorists are asked to use caution and common sense if driving is necessary.




Emergency Sirens Test on January 7

The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), the Delaware State Police, and Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. (PSEG), will conduct a quarterly test of the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations Alert and Notification system on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at 10:45 a.m.
