Employee-driven Department of Correction competition to showcase Officers’ skills, encourage physical fitness, boost pride

This spring the Delaware Department of Correction will launch a one-day competition that tests Correctional Officers and Probation Officers on their level of proficiency in a variety of job-related skills. The Guardian Shield Challenge is the first and only challenge of its kind for correctional employees and was established voluntarily by correctional officers, with the strong support of the Department’s leadership. The challenge, which begins April 27, is designed to test each participant’s level of skill in physical fitness, weapon marksmanship, hands-on core skills, and job knowledge.




Department of Correction announces unauthorized departure of three offenders from Wilmington work release center

The Delaware Department of Correction announces that three work release offenders assigned to the Plummer Community Corrections Center in Wilmington left the facility together last night by absconding over the perimeter wall. The facility was immediately secured, all other offenders were accounted for, and local police were notified. Attempts by the Department of Correction and other law enforcement agencies to make contact with the offenders have been unsuccessful and escape warrants for their arrests have been issued.




Department of Correction marks the graduation of its 206th Correctional Officer training class

Today, 32 Department of Correction staff took their oaths of office and immediately begin assignments in prison facilities across the state after graduating from the Department’s Correctional Officer training academy. More than 200 family, friends, and colleagues celebrated their accomplishment at a ceremony in the Department of Correction’s Dover headquarters.




Breaking Bread Behind Bars

A groundbreaking culinary event called Breaking Bread Behind Bars was added today to the lineup of 35 events in May during the 2015 MidAtlantic Wine + Food Festival. This dinner is a collaboration between the Delaware Department of Correction, Delaware restaurant group SoDel Concepts, and the MidAtlantic Wine + Food Festival to benefit skills training for Delaware offenders and facilitate their reentry to the community.




Inmate Death – Darius Johnson

Darius Johnson, age 58, an inmate at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna, died in the prison infirmary yesterday evening, March 15, 2015, of natural causes following a lengthy illness. Johnson, of Wilmington, DE, was serving a life sentence for robbery and assault.
