Attorney General’s Office Secures No-Contact Order Against Lenore Matusiewicz

Wilmington – Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden announced today that a Family Court judge has issued an order forbidding Lenore Matusiewicz, age 67, of Edcouch Texas, from having any contact with the children of Christine Belford and David Matusiewicz. She must stay 1,000 feet away from her grandchildren at all times and can have no direct or indirect contact with them.

 

Police have identified Matusiewicz’s husband, Thomas, as the assailant in the shooting death of Belford, their son’s ex-wife, and her friend Laura Mulford, in the New Castle County Courthouse yesterday.

 

“The children are safe,” Biden said. “We sought this no-contact order because we believe Lenore Matusiewicz is a danger to the children and should not have any contact with them. Her actions over the past five years have given us serious concern that she poses a risk to the children’s safety.”

 

Biden’s office prosecuted Lenore in 2009 for helping her son, David, to kidnap his and Bedford’s three children. Lenore and David fled with the children to to Canada, Texas, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and eventually Nicaragua, where they were found by the U.S. Marshall’s Service living in a motor home that Lenore had purchased.  She was convicted of 3 counts of endangering the welfare of a child and sentenced to 18 months in state prison.

 

For his part in the kidnapping scheme, David was convicted of one federal count of bank fraud (48-month sentence) and one federal count of international kidnapping (36-month sentence that ran concurrently). After serving his time in federal prison and a halfway house, David was released from federal custody in September 2012. Before he was released, the Attorney General’s Office successfully terminated his parental rights.
