Governor’s Weekly Message Transcript: Sustaining Delaware’s Strong Economy through Employment Growth

Former Governor Jack Markell (2009-2017) | News | Date Posted: Friday, October 7, 2016

Delaware’s economy today is strong, with the lowest unemployment rate in a decade and job growth that leads the region. But that doesn’t happen by accident. Businesses today can choose to locate just about anywhere, and the Markell Administration works tirelessly to attract and retain employers — from the largest corporations that hire thousands of Delawareans, to our small businesses who collectively employ more people than any other sector, to entrepreneurs and start-ups with the next great idea.

The Delaware Economic Development Office is hard at work building relationships with job creators and sharing with them that we offer a welcoming business climate, highly-skilled workforce, and high quality of life. Our efforts are paying off. Businesses such as Techmer Engineered Solutions, a specialty plastics manufacturer recently relocated to Delaware. Techmer outfitted a new state-of-the-art facility near Wilmington that will soon employ 60 workers, and plans to add dozens more in the coming years.

We offer programs like the State Small Business Credit Initiative which offers lower interest rates to small, start-up businesses and nonprofit employers. Over the past 5 years that’s helped nearly three dozen businesses open and expand their operations, including Alpha Technologies, an IT services firm which is creating hundreds of full-time technology jobs in Delaware.

And we must continue to support workforce development, from grants to help train workers for specific employers to being involved in the Governor’s Pathways to Prosperity initiative, which is giving 6,000 high schoolers the chance to earn college credit and gain workplace experience in high-demand fields. Through these and other initiatives we will continue to seek innovative ways to attract new businesses on the cutting edge of technology, grow and educate our workforce, and sustain our strong economic growth. And that will keep Delaware moving forward.
