Delaware Forest Service announces new turkey permit for state forests

For the first time, the Delaware Forest Service (DFS) will issue turkey hunting permits through a separate lottery for the 2019 spring season. Previously, statewide permits were available only through DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife. The 2019 Delaware turkey hunting season runs for four consecutive weeks from Saturday, April 13 to Saturday, May 11, with a special youth and non-ambulatory disabled hunter day scheduled for Saturday, April 6.  State forest turkey permits will be issued for one of four season segments: A (4/13-4/19), B (4/20-4/26), C (4/27-5/3), or D (5/4-5/11).




DNREC’s Division of Parks & Recreation’s Delaware Seashore State Park to host 38th annual Sandcastle Contest

For nearly 40 years, Delaware Seashore State Park has hosted an annual Sandcastle Contest, and it has become one of the park’s major events. At 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14, some 30 teams – totaling around 100 visitors from in and out of state – are expected to participate.

DOVER – When the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers struck rock bottom during deepening of the Delaware River navigational channel, the state’s artificial reef program under the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of Fish & Wildlife struck a new partnership with the Corps of Engineers for creating new fish habitat. Since last December, DNREC’s Fisheries Section and the Corps have partnered on a beneficial reuse project for converting nearly a million tons of rock removed from the river bottom into enhanced habitat for marine life on two artificial reef sites in the lower Delaware Bay – and at no cost to the state.




Delaware Cancer Mortality Continues to Decrease; Public Health Releases Annual Cancer Report

Cancer screening and early detection efforts continue to drive down Delaware’s all-site cancer mortality rates, say Delaware public health officials. From 2000-2004 to 2010-2014, Delaware’s cancer death rate decreased 12 percent, an impressive improvement though slightly lower than the decline seen nationally (14 percent), according to the latest cancer data announced by the Division of Public Health (DPH).




Boat ramp and parking lot at Holts Landing State Park will be closed July 9 and 10 by DNREC’s Division of Parks & Recreation for final phase of construction upgrades

MILLSVILLE – DNREC’s Division of Parks & Recreation will close the boat ramp and adjacent parking lot at Holts Landing State Park Monday, July 9, and Tuesday, July 10, while paving is completed on the parking lot upgrade that will add 36 new boat trailer parking spaces at the ramp. This is the final phase of an ongoing construction project at Holts Landing State Park begun earlier this year. The boat ramp at Holts Landing is scheduled to be closed only on the dates listed above, and will reopen Wednesday, July 11, weather permitting.
