State officials are accepting applications from agricultural producers, nonprofit organizations, government entities, for-profit companies and educational institutions for projects promoting or enhancing the production of and access to Delaware specialty crops.




Gov. Markell Celebrates Arbor Day at Blackbird State Forest

At Arbor Day ceremonies today, the State of Delaware announced the $595,000 purchase of the historic Wilson Farm, 85 acres of forestland to become part of the 12,500-acre Redden State Forest near Georgetown, Sussex County. Funded by Delaware’s Open Space Preservation Program, the deal marks the latest acquisition in a multi-year “Green Horizons Project” to sustain working forests, improve water quality, and protect wildlife habitat in key environmental regions on the Delmarva Peninsula.

The Delaware Nutrient Management Commission has released its 2012 Annual Report, documenting the progress Delaware farmers and other nutrient handlers have made in reducing nutrient runoff.




Emerald Ash Borer traps ready to catch invasive forest pest

Delaware Department of Agriculture staff members are placing triangular purple traps in trees across Delaware in 54 locations, in all three counties, designed to detect whether a tree-killing insect has made its way into Delaware. The traps contain a nontoxic chemical lure that will attract an insect known as the Emerald Ash Borer, which can devastate ash trees, making up one percent of Delaware’s forests.
