DNREC’s final tally: Almost 1,000 volunteers collected more than 17 tons of trash at 26th annual Christina River Cleanup

The numbers are in for the 26th Annual Christina River Cleanup: The nearly 1,000 volunteers who recently turned out for the event collected more than 17 tons of trash from the river and its tributaries, including more than 300 discarded tires, an air conditioner, part of a prosthetic leg, a bucket seat from a van and a cash register box.

DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife’s training for “bat spotting” will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 19 at DNREC’s Aquatic Resources Education Center (AREC), located at 2520 Lighthouse Road, Smyrna, DE 19977.

To achieve public compliance through education and enforcement actions that help conserve Delaware’s fish and wildlife resources and ensure safe boating and public safety, DNREC Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police officers between May 1-7 made 4,630 contacts with anglers, hunters, boaters and the general public, including 32 vessel boardings for boating safety, hunting and fishing regulation compliance checks, issuing 11 citations.




Hearns Pond dam and boat ramp closed through July while replacement structures are completed

Construction activity at Hearns Pond dam and boat ramp north of Seaford has been delayed this spring by high water and storm events, meaning public access areas at the pond will remain closed through July while the replacement dam and boat ramp are completed, according to DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife, which operates and maintains the state-owned facility.

The 205-foot US Coast Guard Cutter Tamaroa was sunk today approximately 26 nautical miles from both Lewes, Del., and Cape May, N.J., onto an artificial reef that enhances recreational opportunities off the coast of the states that partnered in sending her down.
