Delaware issues updated fish consumption advisory

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the Department of Health and Social Services’ Division of Public Health today updated the fish consumption advisory for fish caught in the tidal Delaware River. The updated advisory is a result of analysis of chemical contaminants in fish caught in the tidal Delaware River and elsewhere throughout the state. The change reflects long-term environmental improvements in the tidal Delaware River.

Former Delaware Governor and United States Congressman Michael Castle was the honored guest today as Governor Jack A. Markell joined U.S. Senator Chris Coons, U.S. Congressman John Carney, Deputy Secretary Nicole Majeski, Department of Transportation (DelDOT), and Secretary Collin O’Mara, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) in cutting the ribbon on the new Michael N. Castle Trail on the north bank of the C&D Canal.

In celebration of the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve’s 20th anniversary, DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara and Delaware Coastal Programs Administrator Sarah W. Cooksey welcomed environmental partners and guests to the Arts in the Estuary event at the St. Jones Reserve. Today’s event showcased the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve (DNERR) and the federal/state partnership in advancing Delaware’s coastal and estuarine conservation, research and education.

To celebrate the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve’s 20th anniversary, the St. Jones Reserve is holding an event – Arts in the Estuary – and the Delaware Native Plant Society’s Annual Native Plant Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28. Admission is free to the event, being held, rain or shine, at the Reserve, 818 Kitts Hummock Road, Dover and at the John Dickinson Plantation located next to the Reserve at 340 Kitts Hummock Road – two of the most treasured natural and cultural areas in Delaware.




American Birding Association announces North American headquarters moving to Delaware City

Governor Markell joined officers from the American Birding Association (ABA) to announce the ABA’s plans to move its North American headquarters from Colorado to Delaware next year.
