Cites Senator Carper’s Leadership in the Fight for Delaware’s Largest Postal Facility

Delaware State SealWilmington – Governor Jack Markell thanked the members of the state’s congressional delegation for leading a broad-based and aggressive effort to remove the Hares Corner Postal facility from the list of possible closures. The coalition of workers, businesses, community groups and public officials who came together to make the case for the facility demonstrated how Delaware tackles problems.

“Senators Carper and Coons and Congressman Carney each say that jobs are their top priority. They committed themselves to this fight and kept fighting. They deserve tremendous credit for this announcement,” said Markell, who directed members of his Cabinet to make clear at the hearing the scope of the potential economic impact a closed facility would have, not just for the workers there but for the business that rely on a major Delaware facility as a means of reaching their customers.

The Governor pointed specifically to Senator Tom Carper’s critical role as Chairman of the Senate
Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services, and International Security “for focusing attention on the value of the Hares Corner facility and the commitment of its workers.”

“Senator Carper was absolutely tireless in his efforts and advocacy for the workers and their families. His intricate knowledge of the postal system and his unflagging optimism that the facility could be saved helped carry the day,” Markell said.

Markell also highlighted the employees at the facility, “Every single day, the workforce at Hares Corner is working hard to provide services to Delawareans and our employers. This decision affirmed what we’ve known all along – their contribution is very important to our community.”
