Scouts to plant 4,000 trees at Blackbird State Forest on April 6 & 7

MEDIA ADVISORY:
Boy and Girl Scouts from the Delmarva Peninsula will join adult volunteers to plant 4,000 seedlings on a 10-acre tract of Blackbird State Forest on April 6 and 7, 2013 from 10 am to 4 pm each day. Seedlings will be planted rain or shine.

In 2012, 73 youths and 49 adult volunteers planted 4,000 oak seedlings on a 10-acre planting site. To date, over 90 percent have survived.

What: Hardwood tree seedling planting project on 10 acres of open ground

Who: All Two Bays Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venture Crews; Girl Scouts Chesapeake Bay Troops.

When: Saturday and Sunday, April 6 & 7, 2013 – 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day

This is a rain or shine event, once delivered, the tree seedlings must be planted.

Where: Blackbird State Forest; east side of Blackbird Forest Road, 1.4 miles southwest of junction with Rt. 13 (north of Smyrna).

Why: The State of Delaware recently purchased this tract of land and would like to reforest 10 acres with hardwood tree seedlings. Scouts will earn service hours and complete rank and conservation award requirements where applicable.

How: Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves, sturdy shoes, and a desire to help complete this conservation project. Planting tools will be provided.
