Wilmington man pleads guilty to murder and 2 other shootings
A 26-year-old New Castle man will spend the rest of his life in prison for murder. A Superior Court judge sentenced Shaheed Matthews for the December 2017 fatal shooting of Antoine Terry, 23, of New Castle shortly after Terry had been at Matthew’s home on Parma Avenue. A Superior Court jury convicted Matthews in April 2019 of Murder First Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited. Matthews cannot have a gun because of a juvenile felony adjudication. Deputy Attorneys General Joseph Grubb and Michael Cooksey prosecuted the case with the assistance of paralegal Stacey Coupe, social worker Lisa Rapko, support specialist Ted Griffin, and special investigator Guillermo Santiago. Det. Eugene Reid from the New Castle County Police Department was the lead detective.
A second person has pleaded guilty in connection to a 2017 murder in Wilmington, as well 2 other shootings. In January 2017, Therion Reese, 24, of Wilmington, was involved in a shooting that killed 21-year-old Kaden Young and left 20-year-old Shyjuan Dickerson wounded. In February 2017, Reese fired several shots into a car at the intersection of Beech and Van Buren Streets in Wilmington, striking the teenage driver in the leg, and in December 2016, shot at a teen and his mother as they walked along South Jackson Street. Reese pleaded guilty to Murder Second Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Assault Second Degree, and Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited. A Superior Court judge will sentence Reese, barred from having a gun because of felony adjudications as a juvenile, in October. Isaiah Baird, Reese’s co-defendant in the January 2017 shooting, pleaded guilty to Murder Second Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Conspiracy First Degree and will also be sentenced in October. Deputy Attorney Generals Daniel McBride and Michael DegliObizzi prosecuted the cases. Detective Robert Fox and Detective Devon Jones of the Wilmington Police Department led the investigation.
