DOVER, Del. (December 22, 2025) – The Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS) is encouraging Delawareans to celebrate the new year safely by offering its annual New Year’s Eve Sober Rides program. The initiative provides $20 ride-share vouchers for Uber or Lyft to help prevent impaired driving during one of the most dangerous nights of the year.

New Year’s Eve consistently sees an increase in impaired driving crashes, injuries, and fatalities. From 2020 through 2024, the period from December 15 to December 31, which includes

Holiday and New Year’s celebrations, saw 310 impaired driving crashes and 17 impaired driving–related fatal crashes in Delaware—highlighting why New Year’s Eve remains one of the most dangerous nights of the year to drive impaired.

To support safe celebrations statewide, OHS—through generous donations from its partner agencies—is making it easier for Delawareans to choose a sober ride home. Key program details include:

  • Voucher Claims Open: Wednesday, December 31 at 3:00 p.m.
  • Voucher Valid: Wednesday, December 31 at 5:00 p.m. through Thursday, January 1 at 3:00 a.m.
  • Availability: Vouchers are released at intervals throughout the day. If a voucher appears unavailable, users are encouraged to check back

“As Delawareans come together to celebrate the new year, we want to ensure everyone gets home safely,” said Sharon Bryson, Director of the Delaware Office of Highway Safety. “One impaired driving crash is one too many. Planning a sober ride is an easy decision that can save lives.”
