Earlier this week, we shared some exciting news regarding Delaware’s public education system – next school year, nearly 1000 kindergarteners and first graders will be enrolled in our world language immersion program, spending half their school day  learning in either Chinese or Spanish. Over the next decade, we expect that number to reach 10,000. It’s one of many ways we’re working to create a world class education system.

Also this week, 20,000 students in Delaware will begin taking the National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP.  NAEP, also known as the Nation’s Report Card, will be administered to students across the country in grades 4, 8 and 12 from now until March 8.

Finally, we continue exploring ways to better recruit and keep great teachers because, as I said in my State of the State Address, it takes great teachers to keep up with our young learners. Our teachers know what they need to succeed. We know teachers need to be heard, which is why we recently launched TELL Delaware, an online, anonymous survey for educators and school administrators.  It’s open until February 15 at telldelaware.org.  I have never been more proud of the work being done in our schools. Preparing our children now for their future is a sure way we can keep Delaware moving forward.
