Governor’s Weekly Message Transcript: Promoting Good Habits to Create a Healthier Community

Former Governor Jack Markell (2009-2017) | News | Date Posted: Friday, January 10, 2014

Supporting the health of Delawareans means more than just providing quality care when people become  sick. At a time when many of us are resolving to eat better, get in shape and lead a healthier lifestyle in the New Year, we all have a better chance to succeed with encouragement and useful tips. That’s the inspiration for our January social media campaign called “31 Days to a Healthier You.” We promoted it earlier this week at Fusion Fitness in Newark. On Facebook, Twitter and other platforms, our Department of Health and Social Services is partnering with the YMCA to offer fitness ideas, healthy recipes, advice on how to quit smoking, information on health screenings and more. The campaign also promotes active participation – asking Delawareans to post changes their making to encourage their friends and neighbors to join the effort as well. During this campaign, we’re suggesting ways to make a small, sustainable change, whether it’s making a piece of fruit part of your lunch, taking a 15 minute walk in the evening, or getting an extra hour of sleep a night – something you can stick with. And we’re helping government employees through our DelaWELL health program, which provides state employees with wellness assessments, personal health coaching, and more. By creating a forum to help each other reach personal health and wellness goals, we’ll keep Delaware moving forward.
