A Wilmington man has been sentenced in the 2023 murder of Cynthia Amalfitano. On January 31, Stephen Heck, 67, was sentenced to life in prison for Murder 1st Degree by a New Castle County Superior Court Judge. Heck was convicted at trial in October of 2024 following an investigation into the disappearance and death of Cynthia Amalfitano, Heck’s partner, whose body was discovered in Pike Creek’s Carousel Park.
“This case remains a tragic reminder of the grave consequences of domestic violence,” said Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “I am deeply grateful to our prosecutors and the New Castle County Police for their dedication to this case. Nothing can bring back the life that was stolen, but our hearts are with Cynthia Amalfitano’s loved ones during this difficult time.”
“Through the dedicated work and collaboration of our detectives, patrol officers, and prosecutors from the Delaware Attorney General’s Office, justice has been delivered for Cynthia Amalfitano’s family,” said New Castle County Chief of Police Colonel James Leonard III. “The life sentence given to Stephen Heck reflects the severity of his actions and ensures he is held accountable for his crimes. This outcome shows our dedication to seeking justice and supporting victims of domestic violence. We stand with the Department of Justice in recognizing the harm caused by these tragedies and the importance of holding offenders responsible.”
On September 25, 2023, Amalfitano was reported missing after failing to report to work. Following a search, New Castle County police discovered her body in the underbrush of Carousel Park; a subsequent autopsy confirmed that she died from strangulation and blunt force trauma. Evidence collected during the investigation, including cell phone data, DNA, and bloodstains found in the defendant’s vehicle, contributed to Heck’s arrest, indictment, and conviction.
